Kamila Rustambekova (b. 1998, Yangiyul, Uzbekistan) is a photographer and filmmaker based in Tashkent and Amsterdam. In her work, Kamila studies the image and untold stories of modern Uzbek society.
For several years, Kamila has been exploring the working and living conditions of people around Uzbekistan. In her series 'Another Paris', she delves into the lives of seasonal farmers. In 'Jannat' (uzb. for 'paradise'), she critically examines the past and present of Uzbekistan's cotton-picking industry, a colonial project that has persisted for over a century. As a director, Kamila debuted with 'Fairy Tale,' which premiered at the GoEast IFF and tells a story of a boy and his mother coming to terms with his sexuality.
Kamila’s work has been featured at It's Nice That, Nowness Asia, Fotofilmic, Calvert, Safelight Paper, Wül Magazine, East East, Buro Kazakhstan. She has participated in exhibitions including ‘Baesianz presents KIN’ at the Guts Gallery in London, UK, and the ‘New East Festival: A Celebration of Contemporary Photography’ at IDEAL Barcelona in Spain, among others. In 2024, Kamila received the Prince Claus Seed Award. Kamila has been a member of Women Photograph since 2023.
